Tiny Tower

Tiny Tower is a free iPad, iPod and iPhone app that is a virtual tower of businesses and residences that you build. As your businesses make money, you can buy more floors and build your tower higher and higher. You can buy a residential floor that 5 people can live in and then you need to find jobs in your tower for those people. They usually have a dream job and if you get that person that job, you make them happy and you can get a Tower Bux (money!). There are so many businesses you can buy. My favorites are the volleyball club and the car dealership. Each business can have up to three employees and can sell...

Learn to Draw Digital Sketchbook by Walter Foster

Learn to Draw by Walter Foster is a great app that teaches you how to draw all sorts of interesting things like animals, people, flowers, dragons and more. They have different lessons that you can pick, by starting out with outlines that you trace. Each step gets more complex. You also use different tools like a sketch pencil, a shading pencil, a detail pencil and an eraser. There is a size slider that changes the width of your stroke, the pressure slider changes the lightness or darkness of the stroke and the hardness slider changes the edges of the stroke. You can zoom in to add more details to your drawing. You also have the option to free draw....

NxtApp 4 Kids

NxtApp 4 Kids is a great way to teach kids how to add and subtract to figure out the pattern. The game is available for iOS devices available at the iTunes app store. They have multiple games to play, which makes learning fun. The concept of the game is to figure out the next number that comes in the pattern. There is a sequence of 4 numbers and one of them is blank. At first it’s really simple, for example 1, 2, __, 4. Then it gets more difficult as you progress, like 4, __, 18,25. At this point you have to use addition and subtraction. So to figure out the missing number, subtract 18 from 25 and you...

Middle School Confidential iPad App

The folks over at Electric Eggplant, makers of “Middle School Confidential™”, recently invited us to take a look at their new app for the iPad, “Be Confident in Who You Are: A Middle School Confidential™ Graphic Novel”. Although the title of this interactive comic book is a little on the long side, it is an enjoyable read with a good message. As you would expect with an interactive comic book, there are multiple ways to read it. It works both horizontally and vertically. You can flip through like a normal comic, one page at a time or zoom in and read it one comic pane at a time. I recommend reading it zoomed in, it’s a much better experience,...

Bakery Story

In Bakery Story, you own your very own bakery that you get to design. In order to make money and have happy customers, you have to make food, but make sure you have money! You can make muffins, cookies, cakes, pies, cappuccinos, mochas and much more. Some food can take 5 minutes to bake while others can take 2 days to bake. It costs money to make the food but you’ll earn money from selling it. Be sure not to let your food sit too long on the stove after it’s finished cooking otherwise it can spoil. For instance, if something takes one hour to bake, then you have 1 hour after it’s finished baking to serve it or...

Farm Story: Valentine’s Day

Farm Story: Valentine’s Day is pretty much the same as Farm Story because you actually own the same farm in both. The Valentine’s Day version just has a bunch of flowers surrounding your farm and you have missions you can complete if you want. You can skip the missions by paying gems but don’t do that because gems are very, very hard to earn. Of course, you can buy gems with real money but don’t waste gems on the missions! In this game, you plant trees, produce, fruit and flowers. You water other people’s farm so that hopefully they will water back. When your farm is ready for harvest, you get more money from the plants that were watered....
